Kathy (Frickman) McPhillips passed away unexpectedly on May 21, 2015. She was a member of the John Carroll class of 1996 and leaves behind her husband Don, head athletic trainer at John Carroll, and three children: Haleigh, Jack and Samantha.

About our friend, mother, sister, daughter and teammate....

Kathy came to JCU from Cincinnati Oak Hills High School. A highly decorated high school athlete, she continued her athletic career at John Carroll as a member of both the volleyball and basketball teams.

Her talents helped fuel an OAC championship and first ever NCAA Elite 8 appearance for John Carroll volleyball. She also captained the 1993 volleyball team that has since been inducted into the John Carroll Athletic Hall of Fame. Kathy played in 77 basketball games as a Blue Streak, starting in 16 of them. Often starting her season late due to volleyball commitments, Kathy still managed to score 377 points and grab 232 rebounds. Her .471 field goal percentage ranks 12th all-time in JCU history.

Kathy lettered 8 times in two sports at John Carroll, and never suffered through a losing season. Combining her volleyball and basketball team records, she won 187 times while losing just 66, amounting to a career winning percentage of .739.

Kathy’s dedication and loyalty manifested themselves on a daily basis. Most recently, she was a well-respected 8th grade math teacher at Notre Dame Elementary School in Chardon. Her love of education, math, and nurturing students’ needs was evident in her day to day work. Kathy embodied the true John Carroll spirit with her desire to serve others.

An avid Duke basketball fan, Kathy’s dreams came to fruition when she and Don recently attended a game at Cameron Indoor Stadium and soaked in the special atmosphere.

While that experience was one she would not forget, the most precious time Kathy spent was that with friends and family. Whether it was one of her trips to the Outer Banks or Disney Land, or watching one of her children’s sporting events, being with her family was what mattered most.

She truly loved being a mom, a wife, a sister, a mentor, a friend, and a teammate and anyone who met Kathy would instantly recognize her zest for life.
